Treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Israel is carried out using advanced technologies, a professional approach and modern diagnostic methods.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is one of two types of lymphomas that develop in the lymphatic system. The disease can nucleate in any organs and refers to malignant neoplasms formed from lymphocytes, among which B and T cells are distinguished. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a more common disease than another type — Hodgkin’s lymphoma. There are many different subtypes of NHL.
Subtypes of the most common non-Hodgkin lymphomas are represented by B-cell lymphomas such as:
Clinical manifestations of non-Hodgkin lymphoma usually include:
Diagnosis includes the following studies:
A histological study of the contents of the lymph node using a biopsy, which is used to diagnose non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, allows to accurately determine the presence, degree of aggressiveness and type of disease. Material obtained during bone marrow puncture is checked for the presence of pathological cells in the central nervous system.
In cases where lymphoma grows slowly, there are no symptoms of the disease, and the patient’s well-being does not worsen, then the need for treatment may not be required for many years. However, the patient, even before the onset of symptoms, needs to visit a doctor regularly to monitor his health.
For the treatment of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Israel, chemo- and radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation are used. Perhaps, for the treatment of lymphoma, one of the types of treatment will be required, or it will be necessary to use several methods.
In the diagnosis of aggressive forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, with intensive growth and spread in the human body, it is necessary to immediately begin treatment.
Chemotherapy is a medical treatment using drugs that destroy and slow down the growth of pathological cells (cytostatics). Chemotherapy drugs are often administered intravenously, in some cases also prescribed for oral administration. To increase the effectiveness of cancer treatment in Israel , several chemotherapeutic drugs are used simultaneously. The combination of chemotherapy drugs with other methods of therapy can significantly improve the patient’s well-being.
Radiation therapy courses can be used either separately or in combination with chemotherapy.
Stem cell transplantation involves the preliminary use of elevated doses of chemotherapy or radioisotope irradiation in order to eliminate diseased cells that cannot be destroyed with standard doses. Then an autologous (from the patient itself) or allogeneic (from the donor) transplantation of healthy stem cells, which serve to form new healthy blood cells, is performed.
For immunotherapy of lymphoma, drugs are used that increase the activity of the patient’s immune system to fight cancer. The use of drugs containing monoclonal antibodies in the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphomas significantly increases the chances of curing patients. The drug with monoclonal antibodies attaches to pathological B cells, which makes them more visible to the immune system, telling it about the cells that should be destroyed. One such drug is rituximab.
Radioimmunotherapy drugs such as Zevalin and Tositumomab are also used to treat lymphomas in Israel.
